Join us to hear from our keynote speaker, Captain Ronald S. Johnson, Commanding officer of Troop C – Missouri State Highway Patrol. Captain Johnson was the designated lead Police Captain during the civil unrest in Ferguson, Missouri. He will focus on Ferguson- Lessons Learned, its community impact and response. Light will be shed on successful communication and intervention strategies.

About Captain Ronald S. Johnson

Captain Ronald S. Johnson joined the Missouri State Highway Patrol on July 1, 1987. After graduation, he was assigned to Troop C St. Louis. In 1995, he was promoted to corporal and designated assistant zone commander. In 1997, he was promoted to sergeant and designated zone commander. In October 1999, Captain Johnson was promoted to lieutenant and transferred to Troop A, Lee’s Summit. In 2002, he was promoted to captain and returned to Troop C as commanding officer. Captain Johnson was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He holds a criminal justice degree, is a graduate of Northwestern University Traffic Institute of Police Staff and Command, and a 2014 graduate of the National Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy. He is certified in police instruction and the development/implementation of Assessment Center exercises formatted for command level staff officers. He serves on various committees within the Patrol and Community.

Captain Johnson is a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., (St. Louis Beta Nu Chapter 1983) and also serves on the board of Marygrove Childrens Home, which is supported by Catholic Charities (Archdiocese of Saint Louis). In November of 2001, Governor Bob Holden appointed Captain Johnson to the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission. He served a second term as commissioner on the Peace Officer Standards Training Commission after being reappointed in July of 2007, by Governor Matt Blunt.

Captain Johnson served as the Chairman of the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission under the appointment by Governor Jay Nixon until his term ended on January 9, 2017. On August 14, 2014, Governor Jay Nixon appointed Captain Johnson to lead protest security in Ferguson, Missouri, following the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown, Jr. Captain Johnson has received numerous awards / recognitions including the Missouri Chamber of Commerce 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award, Historical Society of St. Louis County’s Community Service Award, 2014, Ebony Power 100’s Community Crusader Award 2014, Missouri Community College Association’s 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award, named one of CNN’s Extraordinary People in 2014, St. Louis County NAACP Rosa Parks’ Citizenship Award 2015, Missouri State University’s Statewide Diversity Champion Award 2015, Because of Them We Can Award 2015, and the St. Louis Celebrity Seniors’ Helping Hand Reducing Street Violence Award.

Captain Johnson has been married for twenty-eight years, and has two children.
